Dan Tana, founder of eponymous L.A. restaurant known for celebrity clientele, dead at 90

Dan Tana, the restaurateur whose eponymous Santa Monica Boulevard eatery has for decades been a Hollywood hotspot — one with dishes named for celebrities who are liable to be there on any given night — died in Belgrade, Serbia, on Saturday. He was 90.

Tana, born Dobrivoje Tanasijević, was a professional soccer player before opening the clubby red-sauce Italian restaurant in 1964, running it until he sold it in 2009. By then, its reputation as a favorite of A-listers had been cemented by the regular presence of devotees including Elizabeth Taylor and Kirk Douglas.

The details of Tana’s death were confirmed by L.A. historian Alison Martino, a friend of the restaurant’s current owner, Sonja Perencevic, who purchased it from its founder. Martino, who runs the eatery’s Facebook page — where a message posted Saturday announced Tana’s death — said that Perencevic was close with the former proprietor and had been with him in Belgrade on Friday. Martino said she did not know the cause of death.

“Dan lived a wonderful life, and we will keep Dan Tana’s in his memory forever,” Perencevic said in a statement relayed by Martino, who was at the restaurant on Saturday night.

Born near Belgrade, Tana played professional soccer in Canada before immigrating to the United States, where he studied acting. He debuted in the 1957 war film “The Enemy Below,” according to Variety. While seeking acting jobs, the trade publication reported, Tana started as a dishwasher at the Villa Capri restaurant in Hollywood, before eventually becoming the maitre d’ at La Scala in Beverly Hills. That lined him up for a career in food.

Before long, he was opening Dan Tana’s in West Hollywood, near the eastern edge of Beverly Hills. He told the Hollywood Reporter in 2014 that he’d wanted to create an establishment where stars could dine late into the night.

“There was not a decent restaurant serving until 1 a.m. You had to go to a coffee shop,” he told the Reporter.

But Dan Tana’s was not an immediate hit.

It eventually gained a following after actor Richard Burton, a seven-time Academy Award nominee who married Taylor the year the restaurant opened, became a regular presence. It received a jolt in the 1970s, when the Troubadour, a neighboring music venue, began booking big acts such as Elton John, drawing large crowds to the area.

The restaurant, with its red-and-white-checkered tablecloths, and green neon sign, soon became a local institution. It has long been known for the discreet way it caters to the movie stars and moguls who slide across its channeled red booths. George Clooney, former Lakers owner Jerry Buss and heiress Nicky Hilton are among the eclectic bunch of notables with menu items named for them, and the routine presence of celebrities has only burnished the eatery’s aura — especially among tourists hoping for a table.

But guests aren’t necessarily coming for four-star food. The menu eschews the sort of regional Italian cooking that has for years been a staple of the Los Angeles dining scene. Instead, Dan Tana’s offers comfort-food fare such as fettuccine Alfredo and chicken Parmesan.

In 2016, Times restaurant critic Jonathan Gold penned a memorable review of Dan Tana’s, relating the time he took a high school crush there on a date, only to embarrass himself: “The waiter laughed when I tried to order wine, and then served us Sprite in wine glasses. The bill came to $20 more than I had in my wallet. She groaned and pulled out the credit card her parents had given her for emergencies.”

As for the food, Gold called some of it “ordinary,” but noted, “Weirdly enough, I don’t care,” noting the restaurant’s place in L.A.’s culinary firmament. He went on to highlight dishes including the chicken parm, and instructed readers, “Dan Tana’s is not about denying yourself things.”

In the years since Tana sold his restaurant and retired to Belgrade, several landmark L.A. haunts have shuttered, Greenblatt’s Deli, the Original Pantry Cafe and Papa Cristo’s Greek Grill & Market among them. Dan Tana’s has endured, Martino said, in part because it can still deliver a charming, old-world experience.

“When … you walk in, the world stops,” she said. “That’s what I love about it — the history and the food. The staff has been the same: you could leave L.A., come back after five years and come in and they will remember your favorite drink.”

Martino sent The Times a video of an impromptu toast she made in Tana’s honor at the restaurant on Saturday night. Flanked by tuxedoed servers and the maître d’, she announced the founder’s death, mostly silencing the crowded dining room.

“We do not need to be sad,” Martino said. “Mr. Tana would want us to be happy.”

Guests raised their glasses. And the din of a busy restaurant soon returned.

Zoo’s controversial pet feeding policy for predators divides critics

NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!

A European zoo is asking for donations of healthy pets to feed to its predators as part of a controversial policy that has sparked international outrage.

“Did you know that you can donate smaller pets to Aalborg Zoo?” the Denmark zoo posted on social media late last month. “If you have a healthy animal that needs to be removed for various reasons, you are welcome to donate it to us,” it continued.

The zoo, located in the northern city of Aalborg, said in Facebook and Instagram posts that chickens, rabbits and guinea pigs are “an important part of the diet” of some predators, especially the European lynx. The wild cat “needs whole prey that resembles what it would naturally hunt in the wild,” according to the zoo.

On its website, below a picture of a tiger tearing into a furry animal, Aalborg Zoo explains that it accepts animal donations from individuals and businesses for euthanasia and slaughter because its predators need whole animals – including fur, bones and organs – rather than butchered meat.

“In zoos, we have a responsibility to imitate the animals’ natural food chain – for the sake of both animal welfare and professional integrity,” the zoo, which houses about 1,200 animals and a research and conservation center, said in its posts.

The zoo accepts no more than four small pets at a time, and, under certain conditions, also takes horses, according to its website. It does not accept dogs or cats.

Donors are not paid, though the zoo says the contributions are tax-deductible.

The practice drew swift criticism, and the zoo later disabled the comments on its posts, citing “hateful and malicious rhetoric.”

HUNDREDS OF ANIMALS FLEE CARTEL CHAOS, VIOLENCE AFTER WILDLIFE REFUGE FACED WITH THREATS

“How disgusting,” one woman commented on Facebook. “Having your healthy pet killed.”

“Feeding pets is absolutely unacceptable,” wrote someone else.

“How is putting a dead pet on a plate for a caged animal anything close to reenactment of nature,” one person asked.

People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) said in a post on its website that there is nothing natural about feeding companion animals to predators.

“It’s not ‘natural behavior’ for predators from Asia, who roam and hunt for their meals, to be fed companion animals who originated in South America,” the anti-zoo animal rights group argued. Guinea pigs, for example, are native to Peru, Bolivia, Ecuador and parts of Colombia.

Some argue that feeding the predators companion animals does not mimic a natural environment. (iStock)

“Companion animals are never needed to ‘imitate the natural food chain of the [zoo’s] animals,'” PETA added.

Another online critic said the policy spreads a “terrible trend of indifference with animals in Denmark.”

The Copenhagen Zoo was the focus of protests in 2014 after it put down a healthy 18-month-old giraffe because its genes were too similar to other breeds at the zoo, raising concerns about inbreeding.

A veterinarian shot the giraffe and performed an autopsy in front of an audience, according to reports at the time.

European zoos often allow animals to breed freely and then euthanize any surplus, while American zoos more frequently rely on contraception to control populations, The New York Times reported.

Researchers from the University of Zurich argued in a recent report that contraception changes the age profile and welfare of zoo populations, and deprives animals of “one of their most basic evolutionary drives.”

Some social media users also agreed with Aalborg Zoo’s policy, calling it the “circle of life.”

“It’s better for the animals to enter the food chain rather than being thrown into the wild,” one woman wrote.

“It is a dignified end for a pet that has had a good life,” another Facebook user said.

“Horse owners have known that you can donate to the zoo for many years – and it is often seen as a good solution,” said someone else.

One woman said she donated a rabbit to the zoo and described it as a “super nice and professional experience.”

Fox News Digital has reached out to Aalborg Zoo for comment.

In statements to other outlets, a spokesperson said the practice has been in place for “many years.”

“In Denmark, this practice is common, and many of our guests and partners appreciate the opportunity to contribute,” the spokesperson said.

Acer Predator Helios 16S AI Review: Great Performance, Annoying Crashes

The keyboard features four-zone color backlighting, tunable through Acer’s extensive PredatorSense system, which controls everything from battery charging details to whether you want to customize the logo displayed as the laptop boots. It’s available via a dedicated key above the slim numeric keypad. The other bespoke key on the machine is the Mode key, found above the top left of the keyboard. This shifts among four different performance/fan operation modes when plugged in; two of these modes are available when running on battery power.

Thanks to the numeric keypad, the keyboard and touchpad are shifted quite far to the left. This might be a case where you can adapt to the layout over time, but I found it tough to work comfortably when pushed this far to one side, especially when using the arrow keys, which spill over into both the keyboard and keypad areas.

Ports are exceptional and can be found on both sides and the rear of the device. These include two USB-C ports (one with Thunderbolt 4 support), three USB-A ports, a full-size HDMI port, a full-size Ethernet jack, and a microSD card slot. You’ll need to use the separate power jack and 230-watt A/C adapter to power the device. (The adapter itself is heavy but not particularly large, weighing 1.1 pounds.)

The screen is one of the brightest I’ve seen in years, and while the speakers aren’t particularly nuanced, they are at least plenty loud. Unfortunately, they need to be, because when the fan kicks in, which is often, it is extremely noisy.

Put together the whole package, and you’ve got performance to spare on pretty much anything you can throw at this system. The Helios set records nearly across the board on my battery of benchmarks, including (by far) the best GPU-related scores I’ve seen to date, handily beating the MacBook Pro M4 Pro by 50 percent on the Geekbench 6 GPU test while nearly doubling graphics performance over systems outfitted with the last generation of GeForce laptop GPUs.

Oko 12. sata post dovodi tijelo u svojevrsni “mini-keto” stadij.

Iskustva i upozorenja

U komentarima ispod videa mnogi korisnici podijelili su vlastita iskustva s postom.

Zašto ljudi i dalje biraju post?

Unatoč rizicima, mnogi zagovornici ekstremnih oblika povremenog posta, poput dijete OMAD (jedan obrok dnevno), tvrde da im takav režim poboljšava produktivnost, pamćenje, mentalne sposobnosti i pomaže u kontroli tjelesne težine.
