Planning a brisk winter walk over the Christmas period? According to research from the holiday home team at Verdant Leisure, a destination in North East England is the perfect spot to explore.

While the team found the UK’s most beautiful walk was Seven Sisters in Eastbourne, there’s another fantastic choice if that’s a little far away.

Barnard Castle in County Durham is one of the UK’s best places for a winter walk with incredible views to enjoy enroute.

Although it might have hit the headlines during the pandemic for all the wrong reasons, this beautiful spot is well worth a visit.

A spokesperson from Verdant Leisure said: “With nearly two million videos of this spot shared to TikTok and a 4.5 star rating from Tripadvisor, it’s no surprise that Barnard Castle is a favourite wintery walk, offering charming views and is ideal for exploring.

“These ruins of this fortress overlook the scenic market town nestled in the hills of County Durham, sharing its rich history and beautiful landscape with the locals and visitors.

“The surrounding valleys and riversides are ideal for a winter ramble, with what’s left of Barnard Castle reflecting on the river Tees, setting the scene for the perfect wintery walk.”

The ruins of Barnard Castle are open to the public on weekends although it will be closed on Christmas Eve.

‘Lisa T’ wrote on Tripadvisor: “Lovely castle which is surprisingly large. It gives great views to the surrounding countryside and over the bridge.”

‘Stephen F’ said: “Lovely visit to Barnard Castle. A historic site set in lovely grounds on the banks of the River Tees and worth a visit with interesting history.”

The Bowes Museum is the area’s top-rated attraction. A fantastic stop to make at the end of a winter walk, the art gallery is situated in the centre of Barnard Castle
